I have a knack for tutu'ing, used to be a mechanic before I got into IT so have some hands on skills.

I was wondering about porting just the top of a barrel, with the goal to achieve backspin by letting c02 escape above the ball, leaving more air under the ball..

it may sound crazy to people who buy everything off the shelf but im going to try it with my old barrel just for kicks, has anyone tried this before?

It could work ... don't think it's been tried before.

Porting (currently) has always been about removing some of the disruption that paint has to fly through as it leaves the barrel ...

well if you are looking for a flatline type effect, the Apex barrel is set up so that the air is allowed to pass underneath the ball, in the apex tip. Its got a big hollow cavity on the bottom, and a rubber tounge type thing up the top. So that forces the top to slow down and the bottom gets spun as the co2 goes past it.

Just porting the top, may work in that way. but if the gas is moving up from the center, then wouldnt it push/pull the back of the ball up, causing the ball to spin forwards? Thus being somewhat of an anti-flatline.

my thoughts were the gas will move down the barrel in a linear fashion and only the gas near the top of the ball will make a difference. but you may be onto something Jawa

A notch you say, that makes sense, and also the rubber tongue. Got any pics.

if this is true i could just port the bottom, haha

Ohk, found it along with like another 4-5 barrels :D

This one you can see the compartments that allow the air to move around the ball and under it.

Here you can see the rubber tounge(sp?) that acts as a brake to slow down the top of the ball. It is adjustable, with various levels of incline. The more incline, the more it curves. It has a tendency to make the ball travel down about 6-10 inches when it leaves the muzzle, before the backspin takes effect and it starts climbing again.

Kinda handy, but innaccurate as hell. Most people tend to put the Apex tip on a different aftermarket barrel, and that generally makes it a little more accurate.

I have another pic of just the bottom part, but I think you get the idea from the first pic. Hopefully this helps a bit.

Hey Jawa, you were not running the stock Apex barrel were you? Unlike all the other BT made barrels, the Apex barrel itself is shockingly inaccurate. It is better to buy the M16 or AK47 barrel with the apex tip, because most BT barrels don't actually need an aftermarket barrels.

Ive been meaning to put it on another barrel for months... never got round to it. I only found it today because I looked for it. Otherwise I completely forgot I even had it.

And yes, it is horribly horribly inaccurate. Might put it on the end of my stock angel barrel, that would be entirely pointless but fun :D

....lots of people shoot people with just straight barrels....why do you need to curve the ball?

update, I drilled 4 small holes in the top of the barrel and FTW it has given my little 9 inch barrel about the same range as the 16inch spiral ported barrel I got..

interesting..

I reckon by releasing pressure behind the paint ball (via the ports) earlier rather than later will result in lost velocity, also maybe the sharp(ish) edges inside the barrel at the ports would break the balls should they actually come in contact with the top of the barrel.
