View Full Version : Lube me up baby
Alright. There seems to be a general consensus all over the web that Dow Corning "Dow 33" is a good grease to use. But where can we get some? Placemakers extent of lubes is CRC...:-( They pointed me towards Auckland Engineering Supplies who don't stock Dow 33. Anyone know where I can get some?
Now keep in mind you're going to want different lubes for different jobs. If you disassemble and reassemble your inline reg, it looks like you're going to want something like Dow 33 to grease your o-rings. If you're putting some drops of something in your inline reg to squirt through your pneumatics, you're going to want a light weight oil of some sort. I used to use sewing machine oil, but I've recently been told this can contain paraffin, which doesn't like low temps, i.e. the type of temps created by the endothermic reaction of the expansion of compressed air, also causing condensation. Any other suggestions AND where I can get what ever it is?

Bookie can get Dow33 ... as for lube I use the PMI gun lube.
Pete,
As your tank isnot ready yet- hopefully tommorow, the labs been buisy as I gave them 3 buildings worth of extinguishers at the same time, what I'll do is throw a pill container of Dow in the courier package for you. I have a huge tin so leave your wallet in ya pocket.

No hurry on the tank now that last weekend is out of the way...:) If you could chuck in a bit of macroline too that would be much appreciated. I'll sort you out at the Hamilton 3's or next practice...
Pete, what about a low temp silicon based oil or grease? tHE oil I use is actually silicon based, and purchased from engineering supplies.. I'll find out what its called...

i have a BIG tube of dow 55 if u wants some pete,,, otherwise i use a clear silicon based grease, Rocol, in orange tube, from engineering supplies shop, says on tube"used for orings seals, slow speed bearings " has no smell, and is a good product i think.was bout 25 or 30 bills.
yo, when we build the regs we use a adhesive spray lube (wurth) and vaselene. and for all else we use pmi/xtreme rage gun lube.
dont use any grease like shocker grease on the ego's, you dont need it, and depending on where u put it, it can cause problems.

I was planning on using Dow 33 (AKA Shocker grease) on the o-rings of the reg, LPR and rammer. So that sounds like a recommendation not to? (What would Jono know about Egos anyway? :P).
Is the Wurth product you guys use listed on this page (http://www.focussport.com/wurth.htm)? How is it used? You spray the component and then apply a bit of Vaseline to the o-rings? (The Ego is the first time I've ever heard anyone recommend Vaseline for a marker. Even says it in the manual though).
Vasoline use to be used in the 3-ways in ye 'cockers of old. From what I gather Q.E.V's are easily clogged by grease, where oil is easily flows through them without trouble.
Wurth HHS 2000 Lubricant is the puppy im talking bout. Awesome stuff. we use it on everything.
vaseline is fine ( its goes thru the ego qev's, we use vaseline on the regs and lprs and that obviously makes its way thru the FRM into the solenoid and beyond :)
thats what we use when we build them, the shocker grease is a big no no, jack says, oil the rammer and bolt as much as possible and you'll have no problems, wurth and vaseline the reg and LPr When necesary(eg. if you get low velocity problems) im not gonna argue with Jack Wood ;)

An equilivant to Dow is a grease called Molycote (molykote?)
Then I spot this in another forum and sounds interesting
<quote>
Right, go into a dive shop and ask for 'Sub-Lub' its around £3 for a big tube and it is the same stuff as molycoat, specifically made for moving parts, o-rings and regulators.

DO NOT use Molycote 33 as it has an agent in that causes orings to swell so that they make a better seal, we have had a number of the lpr's on our EGO's play up because this stuff, use Molycote 55 instead (same as DOW 55 which is recomended over DOW 33 anyway).
It also stuffs the qev's as one of our team recently dicovered .......
if it makes rubber swell then it WILL screw the QEV as the working part IS rubber :)
seriously guys if you use some Vaseline, that is ALL you need :)
put some pmi gun oil inside the LPR cap or inline top, put vaseling around the LPR pistone and Lpr adjuster piston Or inline piston. and that will be sweet, you dont need to do it very often guys. about every 10000 shots if you feel you need too ;)

Other way around, John. The 55 has the expander additive in it, the 33 is just the standard silicone grease.
