View Full Version : ideas to grown paintball in nz/auckland
hello all,
i was walking with the kids on cornwall park today and thinking about paintball, had a few ideas and i was wondering how big is the paintball over here... how many players, how often they play and how interested would they be in getting together for the good of the sport....
i'm quite new in the scene, well, really new in the scene but i see lots of opportunities that could be explored...
so, what i'm asking here is;
are you in auckland or close to?
how often do you play?
what keeps you from playing more?
do you have any interest in growing the sport? (more ppl to shot at, possible better deals in equipment and paint, better fields, etc):D
any ideas that you would like to share?
cheers guys

any ideas that you would like to share:nun well not realy
Paintball in NZ is pretty much poked at the moment, there is plenty of speculation why on these boards.
The reality is there is no link in Auckland between the rental operators and tournaments, tournament players have little regard in helping field operators and vice versa because most of them have acted like @$$holes.
The Dunners scene has grown pretty well by the looks of things which is a proof of this concept - B2 simply shows the kids the other side of paintball to rolling round in camo.
If I look at the success of the Australian scene at the moment it is definitely linked to fields supporting tourneys. They have 2 major series over there, both linked to the main operators in Sydney.
Incidentally paintball is considerably more expensive over there even now the laws have lax'd, Kiwi's prove to be a tight ass bunch and really don't like paying for things. This also must change.
But to answer your question I live in the Auckland CBD, play pretty much whenever and wherever I can (Australia more often than not)
Wise words Spike..
Its tru...We dont show them Tourney ball...we show them how to play ball and enjoy the moment.
The play regular bushball games and even tho we dont have a air field we have a tyre field which we practise Tourney ball on..
We almost all play some bush games on clubday..Then some go up the top field to shoot some 3/5mans later in the day ..say after 2hrs of bushball.
All the guys see the equipment..We give them the best advice we can on the purchasing of gear.
I tell all new guys..Dont buy any gear until you "know" its for you..Then just buy a Face mask..less outlay if you dont like it and easy to get rid of..
We have the social aspect....after the Clubday its normally a few beers.
This weeknd I have my local 3mans..12teams I think from ChCh down to Invers..Saturday night at my place ..ok which is also the Field..I live at my field 30acres I put on a big BBQ for all attending plus partners..All talking Paintball n bs..makes it a tight unit down South.
i kind of came to believe that it shoudnt be so hard to grown it as every friend, workmate, randon ppl (i'm from hospitality industry and every work day i talk to lots of ppl) that i talked about showed some interest in having a go.
from my perspective, (just initiating on the sport and looking for places to play, meet meet ppl, etc) i found it quite hard as the major options are clubs that i never been to, where you need to organize with a bunch of friends to form a team or two and that are willing to pay $$$ for a paintball game that they know very litle about it.
those places are kind of "hidden" around auckland, with doesnt give the sport so much exposure.
what came to my mind at first is,
if we have enought people willing to give a bit of support we could organize something to show what the sport is and even make it easyer for others like myself to start playing.
and thats why i started this post.
if we do have ppl interested i have a few ideas that i would like to share with the comunity with the aim of (you guessed) growing paintball in new zealand!
so keep it up, we might meet up at some field (after i get my gear set) and discuss about it...

I hear what you are saying and I guess the Auk guys do too..
Heres abit of background for the past...Rotorua Stadium..Massive venue..advertised very well..Very few came to watch.
Wellington Events centre...again very few plus aslight stuff up with promoter..actually charging for ppl to watch.
Western Springs..Awesome venue..again very few actual genuine spectators or just guys wondering about playing ball.
Paintball as you most prob know is an emotive sport..You either love it or hate it..I do both.
Bit like MotoX..Even tho lots do it..If you drove past the MX track you most prob would drive past due to the fact you arent into it...Same as Ball..
The NZRU spend millions on advertising for the AB's...does it make me want to go watch them or "hang" with them..Nope not one iota...same thing as above.
Out of one large company in Dunedin.500plus employees...Sure they played ball at a social club outing but..We had about 8 in total actually eventually come to club day..
Paintball is a sport/game that is for "certain" ppl with that "certain" BIG WINK bent towards that type of thing..
There are no easy answers
i dont know about auckland or the rest of NZ, but here in whangarei with one of the lowest player per head of pop rates in nz , this kind of bs from operators and players is what is putting off the bulk of the potential players.
at the end of the day , when you just want to play for fun you dont need to be tied up in this kind of bs along with the "my gun is better than yours" st
i think instead of disusing how to fix things at the end of the equation. things need to be fixed at the start . players need to stop supporting this kind of behavior and come down hard on anyone who does start this kind of st
But mine is better...than yours Chris.
Type of marker isnt the issue....
One of the most game changing and I guess thoughts on Paintball is the length of time we have now had ball in NZ.
Some of the old school guys will relate to this and it isnt old school v new kids.
Back in our day lets say mid to late 80s..The Vietnam War even tho finished was still a popular movie and in the minds of lots of players and as such Playing Paintball in the bush even with our limited weaponary was so damn good..
When ppl turned up to play ball thats what they mentioned so many times..Christ even I had Tigers as my Cam of choice...Oh for those days again.
Anyhow..as time moved on and the PC ppl of the world said..NO you shouldnt play war games..we need to televise this sport/game and show the multitudes how good it is...ahhhhhhh if only the plan had worked totally.
What the early days did was cement the players together into a cohesive unit..yip a TEAM..
Having your patch on your arm felt good...Guys wore patch jackets..best I saw was Gramps jacket .
It gave the team an identity but it also gave the Field you played at recognition..
We played for our Field ..our city...still do.
Once you become seperate from that you lose Identity..
How can you talk to ppl about ball when if they ask whats your local field and can I come and play with you guys when all you can offer is a Blue/Yellow Taco..
Noobs want the feeling of Fear..Fear of the unknown as they hear the siren start the game..Knowing out there some where is a group of guys shaking in thier shoes just like they are..But also knowing they will feel the adrenalin rip thru them as the first crack of a marker rips thru the air..the whack of a ball as it smashes into a tree or barricade next to them..They will be transported in a world of Jungle warfare..They will think Vietnam/Iraq...
Fear transforms to Adrenalin...then to fun..then if its done right..more sales to the field op..So its a win win situation on both sides...
But whats even better is when they come off and you hear them recalling the stories of how one guy had a"machinegun" and just never stopped firing..the fact he just shot his hundy balls of quicker than they did...How they got the flag and did a massive sprint thru the "jungle" to the base to win..only to be boned out by an over zealous defender..
Thats Paintball...Thats how it should be...
Operators need to responsible...But also Players need to remember thier first game..most would be bush games..go back to your roots...If they look deep within they will know how much fun it is.

Obama who?
B2 for president!
Obama who?
B2 for president!
hear hear!!!!
now that i'm getting in touch with more and more players and ex-players to be (i'm trying to get a second hand marker) i get the feeling that there are some small groups of friends that just get together and either go to someones farm or as one guy that i talked to used to do, get his friends, drive towards coromandel, find a piece of land in the way and set up their field in it. just for the day, avoiding having to pay commercial field prices...
well, it might sound crazy or something but when i was walking on cornwall park last sunday i thought
what if we had a field here, maybe something like a boxed ring closed with nylon net so that ppl out of it could watch safely from a few meters away, a few rules for players so that we could just show up and have a go, maybe someone would be willing to have a few markers there and give interested ppl an intro in to the sport, form some sort of club, kind like the archery club that they have there...
do you think it would be possible to achieve? would we have enough players? would we have enough support? would it be worth all the trouble? what sort of exposure and possibilities would it bring to the sport? are some questions that come to my mind.
i mean, we don't necessarily need a big tourney, with prices and too much fuzz about it, just a place were we all could have some fun and share it with whoever might be interested in know what is it all about...
just some thoughts, feel free to add on your view of it
if we could just make it a bit easier for ppl to have a go... some would get hooked
if you find a good field you can play on club days for less than buying your own paint off trademe and buying fills and you get all the other gear to use like chronos repair workshops etc. so i wouldnt recomend doing the out on the farm thing unless you dont have a decent field near you, as it will cost you more in the end . on club day here it costs about $70-75 per 2000 rounds all up. it would cost you $78 for the box of paint delivered and then another $20 for the gas fills if you did the farm thing.
the problem with setting up in a park for the day is cost and the fact there is only 3 setups in NZ for that kind of thing .
and then you get the hassles i mentioned b4 when what you are doing doent fit someone else's agender.
how ever they do run something like that at big boys toys most years and are happy to help someone do it if they dont have one that year and the nat field days are looking for someone to run something and are willing to help get it running including free space and passes. we have been offered the deal to do the northland field days, but the one in hams is still looking for someone to run something

Yeah - there are things that field operators can do. But it takes the players to work with them as much.
We just ran an open day here at TAG (http://www.tagpaintball.co.nz) in Wellington for the regulars ... you could either buy paint through us (and pay a nominal field fee) or BYOP and pay a slightly higher field fee. It seemed to work for the guys that came out.
That said normal bookings are alway FPO. :)
how about if it wasn't something "for the day" but more like a "fixed" playground for us?
if you are talking a full time club field . it would cost you a fortune to play there and you may as well just go play booked public games.
this place would set you back around $10,000 per year ($5000 if the lawns didnt get mowed )

I have a set of Jousting sticks that I would trade for a commercial Field.
would it be to hard to get a consent and use some land in one of the auckland parks? and sponsorship for the gear needed to build a safe field where ppl could watch us playing?

Hey Yut, how much ball have you played ?
Listen, The fields need to Promote paintball.
All you will do is make people say.....' I want to play paintball'
Then that person will go about looking for a rental field to play at, where 90% of the fields in the country dont guide any players our way (tourney)
If your looking for sponsorship for something to promote paintball, talk to the field owners.
Hey Yut, how much ball have you played ?
hi crapinator, I haven't played much, once about ten years ago and twice here in nz, spent the whole day playing and throughout enjoyed. but the point i'm trying to make here is that from a beginer point of view, it's not easy to get started, I didn't see a speedball game yet.
how did you started playing? how long have you been playing?
after a while i'm sure you find mates and places to play but it does take a while and some people that would be willing to be part of it would just give up before getting in to the stage were things get easier.
cheers
btw, can you help me out, i've been trying to access the milsim wesite, I registered twice but haven't received an email to confirm the registration and have access to the forum. would you post a message for the admin there? thanks

Are you in auckland or close to?
Live in it and love it :D.
How often do you play?
1-3 times a month, practice whenever I can 1-2 a week.
What keeps you from playing more?
Money, other comitments, a desire to move overseas and play ball there.
Do you have any interest in growing the sport? (more ppl to shot at, possible better deals in equipment and paint, better fields, etc)
Hell yes. Mainly the SpeedBall side of things. The BushBall side is bigger then it's ever been and takes care of it's self. Things need to change to get SpeedBall back on track.
Any ideas that you would like to share?
Lots. ;)

Chch had one...When It rained it leaked...
What you need to do is support you local field..Thats where the growth should be..controlled , safe and a focal point to meet

Hey Yut.
I had a few ideas but want to take time out to talk to the team and field owners.
but:
Insane next year will be hitting a few, 3-4 of the Sunday Walkons at Actions as a team. To rub shoulders with the bush crowd. In the past it's proven to get a few more players open to the idea of trying out speed ball and disspells the myth that we are paint spewing monsters. Make new friends some of which play against us or join the team.
The team still has severall hundred cases of practice paint left and I was thinking about haveing the team conduct paintball clinics (perhaps 4 over the year) focusing on speed ball skills. Got to talk to Kyn about price and the use of his sup-air field.
Insane also has it annual Friends and Familly Game, to try and introduce new people to the sport of paintball.
I was thinking about putting together a New Zealand Paintball Youtube channel, with news, events, field reviews ect... I'm not the most savy, but one of our extended team is an amature film maker.
ect...

another idea I had was to have Supair days at Actions. The plan was these Supair days would double as a "dry run" for whatever Auckland event was taking place the following weekend. So teams could practice and we could give the walkon's a taste of Sup.
Spread the word by posting up flyers at school and at work. Knows I've done my fair share of that this and last year. But hey it works.

Ahhh Urban Combat, is Collin (sp) still running that show? I remember playing at the Uraban Combat arena in Pakuranga. Fun times :) Out of curisioty what do you guys do there? I heard you play stock class once a month.
I think that it's up to the players to get organised on a regional level while working with the field owners. The Auck players should all get together and have a "meeting" to discuss some important points. Like
Where do we play?
Who we are?
How often do we play?
How many teams show up?
What would we like to see happen in the region?
ect...
What do you guys think?
Perhaps we could get a bit more cooperation rolling between teams, I attend your event you attend ours type of thing.
And get a calender of events posted up so people know what is comming up well before it's on top of them. Like waht B2 is doing with Easter and such.
