The big X is going as well. They will be using a half "X" just like the one used in the NCPA.

So I haven't really figured out whether the mini X was too easy or too hard to live behind... I never got to play one myself. Anyone know why they dropped it?

We use the mini X frequently as part of Steve Corkill's field and find that if they're on the back line they're pretty easy to live at as the opposition has to lob elevated shots and try to get them into the center notches but if you place them at the 25 or beyond, then you'll likely be short lived as the centre notches make you quite vulnerable from the angles.
Then there are those using them who shoot through the top notch effectively making themselves into a rifle sight and will die quickly where ever they are, lol.

The pros in the NXL and lower divs had a hard time living in the mini X bunkers. Because of there shape they "suck" the balls in. The opposition can bounce them off the upper arms and the notches can funnel shots around to the other side. Refs also had a hard time judging who was hit or not because of the tight tucking in.

I've never played a mini x so I'm just repeating what I've read and heard. I have played a big X and found that if a player is smart you can do the same thing (bounce balls off the upper arms) to get players out. In a game last year Insane vs. Muppets (8-4) last year, Tabz would merc any player that got to the X with a combo of straight shooting and hammering on the upper arms and just dropping balls in from above.

They were too hard to ref, youd have to dedicate a ref on each side to know if there were hits.

Players were pushing themselves in the crack and just dominating until they got called out, also the top v was unreffable to see hits on the front of the hopper.

They were a problem, so they got rid of them.
