I have a mate who's looking at getting one as he's a milsim freak, but as usual, has read wildy varying accounts of accuracy, range etc. It's more for tactical style play, limited rounds etc.
So, what are they like to use?

Pretty variable from what I have read and heard

I would suggest a milsig, or a T68 - they are both 0.68 cal, and as a result more reliable, but they still have the milsim look, mag fed, tank in stock etc...

Range and accuracy are a bit of a misconception. A longer barrel doesnt mean you can shoot further, it also doesnt mean you shoot any more accurately.

A paintball shot at the same FPS from a marker with good paint to barrel match should be comparable to any other marker shooting the same paint / barrel with one pull.

Of course someone will come in here and say dye > eclipse, tac m16 > speedball set up etc which is all just personal choice.

Only thing that can and has shown to increase range is first strike or shooting at 15° in the air which is not going to help accuracy.

Suggest a tippman, rap4 or similar instead at .68 cal

Another good resource is the team over at www.milsim.co.nz ...

The simple advice I will give you is, do not get a RAM gun (your mate) with the intention of using it against ordinary players with standard .68 cal guns (with hoppers).

RAMs are designed to be used with other RAMS. They're mag fed. Shoot a smaller round. Bigger. Heavier. More realistic... and in the world of either tournament paintball or even social woodsball there's basically no place for them. They are really intended for police and military training and when people are silly enough to shoot them in games against 'normal' paintball guns. They lose, and lose, and lose some more... it's like taking a knife to a gunfight.

This is all good stuff, thanks guys.
So basically, get the larger bore size, enjoy the realism, expect to get owned if playing against regular markers :)

when i look at a marker and see "wildy varying accounts" you have got to realize that some of the people that rubbish certain markers dont actually know what end of a screw driver to hold, and most of their problems are simple fixes, these people should stick to laser tag, im not too keen on anything that isnt 68cal, were not a huge market in NZ and sticking to something as easy to get and common as 68cal paintballs IMO is better.

i was running around in the weekend with my new milsig (new to me), and it was pretty fun, not once did my hopper get hit because its mag feed, and i didnt run out of air which i thought i might, i used about 350 balls all up, while everyone else was pushing about 700+ for about the same amount of hits, at no point did i feel the mag feed was getting me owned, a box mag is defiantly on the cards but i might build one as im just not sure about that Rap4 one.

Also the new new tacamo magfed kits are always a good option - were I getting into magfed now I'd be going for one no question. Probably with a phenom. Just waiting for the dmags before I try it out proper.

I recommend trying every sort of paintball. Don't believe the stereotypes about speedballers or milsimmers til you've played with them yourself.

Funnily enough I was talking to the paintball shop, who recently filled an order for something like 30 RAM markers for a bunch of military guys for training. They then came back and got 30 T-68's, loved the T-68's so much they ordered another 50!! So even these military guys had a preference for 0.68 cal

As far as I know the military guys are all using mag fed 68 cal nowadays ram is no where near as popular as it was 4 years ago.

everyone likes bigger balls :joyous:....... i like milsim markers for the looks, i know speedball markers are more efficient and better in most ways but i dont own shares in a paintball factory, after setting up with gear my biggest cost is paintballs, mag feed is definitely helping keep that cost down, it makes every shot count, and its quite fun.
